Painted at the age of twenty-seven, when he had not yet completed his studies at the Special School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Madrid, it is the artist´s first known signed and dated work and one of the rare pieces that provide an insight into his artistic beginnings. It adheres to the official criteria of the time, the social realist trend, always imbued with a certain melodrama, and which has been so prevalent in recent national prizes. This work took part in the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1897 (no. 630), where it was awarded the 3rd Medal.
