The Return after Fishing won a first-class medal at the 1912 National Exhibition of Fine Arts. It was highly praised and consolidated his recognition. The influence of the artist’ stay in Brittany can be perceived in this theme. As is recurrent in his artistic production, it depicts the return of fishermen after a day´s work. This pictorial genre would be definitively established from these years onwards, following the successes the artist had in Spain and abroad. Enrique Martínez Cubells´ vision of the sea is very different from the traditional idea of landscape painting. For him, the sea is always the setting for the life of fishermen and their families. In order to achieve a sense of seclusion and intimacy, Martínez Cubells tended in almost all his paintings to offer a very high viewpoint, which undoubtedly conditions the need to raise the horizon line, a resource that can also be seen in other painters, such as his master Muñoz Degrain
