Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy

XVII century. Reddish wash, Pencil, Grey-brown ink, Pencil ground on laid paper.
Not on display

Saint Francis is depicted kneeling with open arms, raising his eyes to look at a cherub who shows him a sphere. In the foreground, a wooden cross and books rest on top of a rock. This drawing has a landscape background. It is typical of Schut’s style, which imitates Murillo’s. The figure of the saint is clearly inspired by Murillo’s painting, which is now held in a private collection in San Sebastián and which was brought to light by Angulo (1936).
