Saint Ildefonso receiving the Chasuble
XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Pencil, Grey-brown ink, Pencil ground on laid paper. Not on display
Kneeling in profile to the right, the saint receives the chasuble from the Virgin. She is depicted seated on a throne of clouds on the right. In the foreground, two cherubim play with the staff. Behind the saint, another angel holds the mitre. The background comprises an open-air architectural setting; a courtyard or a cloister.
Despite the attribution to Murillo, this drawing typifies Cornelis Schut’s style. This can be easily identified by comparing it with the drawing (signed in 1650) that was once held at the Jovellanos collection in Gijón (Pérez Sánchez, 1969). It also bears the attribution to Murillo by the same hand as that drawing.
