Saint Francis protected by Bishop Guido of Assisi
Ca. 1787. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
Part of the series of thirty-three scenes from the life of Saint Francis (Assisi, Italy, 1182-1226) painted for the basilica of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid and belonging entirely to the Museo del Prado, in which the painters José Camarón and Bonanat also took part (1731-1803), Antonio Carnicero (1748-1814) and Manuel de la Cruz (1750-1792). This scene, commissioned to its author for the decoration of the lower cloister, is taken from the Major Legend of Saint Francis (Saint Bonaventure, Chapter II, 4) and depicts how Saint Francis is welcomed by Bishop Guy of Assisi, making before this prelate a legal renunciation of all his goods, going so far as to strip him of his bag and his clothes, which he left at the feet of his progenitor.
