When Madrazo was commissioned to produce a painting on this theme for Napoleon’s apartments in Rome, he decided to return to the subject of his first known drawing, the Oath of Achilles (Prado, D6682), inspired by Book 18 of the Iliad. Both in the early drawing and in this new composition, the gestures of some of the figures reflect his admiration for the Borghese Gladiator, which he had studied in Paris.
