Still Life with Pomegranates, Apples, Haw Berries and Grapes in a Landscape

Meléndez has managed to integrate different fruits in a disordered thematic association that combines open pomegranates -showing the richness of their transparent seeds- with grapes, elongated apples and haws. The composition is structured in an original manner: the base is the smooth surface of a stone with irregular edges. The setting is a landscape with trees in semi-darkness silhouetted against the cloudy sky.

These still lifes are part of a series of forty-four canvases painted by Luis Meléndez for the Prince of Asturias, the future Charles IV, almost all of which is housed in the Museo del Prado. The different compositions, in which the artist displays his powers of observation and technical abilities, reflect the long-established tradition of the Spanish still life while also departing from it by dispensing with the habitual allegorical and moral allusions in order depict the fruits of the earth from a purely scientific perspective characteristic of the Enlightenment.
