The Agony in the Garden with the Donor Louis I d’Orléans

1405 - 1408. Tempera grassa on oak panel Room 058

Few French paintings from the early fifteenth century have survived and works of this quality and importance are exceptionally rare. The nettle leaves on the sleeves of the donor, who appears here presented by Saint Agnes, have allowed him to be identified as Louis I d’Orléans (1372-1407), brother of the French king, Charles VI and regent from 1393. The high quality of the almost miniaturist technique has led to an attribution to Colart de Laon, painter to the French court.
