The Hunter
Ca. 1850. Oil on canvas. Not on display
Two hunters are depicted in a field alongside three dogs and the hares and partridges they have killed. A carriage and a group of people are visible in the background. The blue-gray color scheme, the seventeenth-century clothing worn by the figures, and their placement indicate that this was Lucas's personal homage to the works of Diego Velasquez. This work was acquired by Order of 13 December 1931 for the now-defunct Museum of Modern Art.
