The Prior’s Cell at the monastery of El Escorial
Ca. 1864. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
Rosales’ meticulous preparation of his paintings involved a considerable amount of preliminary work on paper. He often sketched real historical backgrounds, which he then used in his compositions; there is a good example in this exhibition (P8255). That may have been the purpose of this study of the prior’s cell at El Escorial, although it has not been possible to associate it with any specific painting.
