The Queen Joanna the Mad

Joanna I of Castile, ‘the Mad’ (Toledo, 1479–Tordesillas, Valladolid, 1555). She is the Queen of Castile (1504–1555), although from 1506 she exercised no effective power. After the sudden death of her husband, Philip ‘the Handsome’ (1478–1506), and due to her unhealthy jealousy, she wanted to personally guard his body until his burial in Granada. The piece was included in the 1858 National Exhibition of Fine Arts (no. 121), where it was awarded the 3rd medal. In the catalogue of this event, he was described as follows: ‘...in a moment of exaltation she fears that the corpse of her husband King Philip (the Handsome), which she continually guarded, will be seized, and embracing the coffin, she tries to hide it from the gaze of the two people accompanying her’.
