The Virgin with the Christ Child and Saint Anne
Ca. 1540. Oil on panel. Not on display
Described in the early 19th century as a “composition worthy of Raphael”, there are close parallels with that artist’s work, from the figure of Mary to the Infant Christ’s face. Co-existing with this reference are others to the Valencian tradition of Italianate origin, such as the figure of Saint Anne (which is close to the work of Fernando Yáñez), and to the Flemish tradition in the lush, tranquil landscape. This early work was painted to complete the Saint Sebastian Altarpiece for the Charterhouse of Valldecrist (Castellón).
