This is the preparatory sketch for the painting posthumously depicting the second wife of King Ferdinand VII, Maria Isabel de Braganza (Lisbon, 1797–Aranjuez, 1818), as founding queen of the Real Museo de Pinturas (Royal Museum of Paintings). Dionisio de Bassecorut y Armero, Marquess of Bassecourt (Barcelona, 1793–Madrid, 1874). Field marshal, Minister Plenipotentiary of Ferdinand VII at the Court of Saxony, of the Duke of Luca at the Court of Sardinia and acting Gentleman of Chamber. On his frock coat, he wears the badge of the Order of Saint Ferdinand of the Two Sicilies, Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus of Sardinia, and a cockade.

Alejandro Mon y Menéndez, politician and diplomat, was born in 1801 in Oviedo, where he studied law at the university. Under the protection of the Count of Toreno and his brother-in-law, the Marquis of Pidal, he entered politics after the death of Ferdinand VII, and was appointed Minister of Finance in 1837, 1846 and 1848. Queen María Isabel of Braganza as founder of the Museo del Prado

María Isabel of Braganza was born in Lisbon on 19 May 1797, daughter of John VI of Portugal and Carlota Joaquina of Spain. She became queen of Spain when she married her uncle, Ferdinand VII, on 28 September 1816 and became his second wife. She died during childbirth in Aranjuez on 26 December 1818. It must be noted that this is a posthumous portrait. The artist was the son of Vicente López and his most faithful disciple. As a model for this painting, he used the oval bust portrait
