Philippe de Montebello, Honorary Trustee, 1978-What's on
I’ve travelled all over Spain for years and, when I’m in Madrid, I always visit the Museo del Prado.
I find it impossible to choose between Goya or Velázquez or Antonello da Messina. All the works are different. They all have a different character. The majority of the works, also those by Rubens in the Prado …, are of exceptional quality. And this explains a little what I did at the Metropolitan many years later, which was to show an interest in all the arts with an extremely high level of quality. I can’t single out any one good work that is more important than another, because we change from one day to the next. Our response to the works changes. There are so many extraordinary works of art in the Prado! The pictures by Titian also … I just can’t choose. There are hundreds of important works there.
Honorary Trustee of the Museo del Prado, Director Emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Professor at New York University, and advisor of the Hispanic Society of America.
