This canvas belonged to the unfinished series of Visigoth monarchs painted for the palace of the Buen Retiro. Vicente Carducho, Félix Castello, Jusepe Leonardo and Andrés López also worked on this series. The inventory of the palace drawn up in 1703 recorded only thirteen paintings of Gothic kings. This series was commissioned after 1634, when the other series of canvases of battles decorating the Salón de Reinos in the palace had already been completed. Some of the artists who had collaborated on the latter series also worked on this.
