Antonia Martínez de Pedrosa
1867. Oil on canvas. Not on display
This is a preparatory sketch for the portrait of Eduardo Rosales’ maternal aunt, dressed in strict mourning. The finished painting, whose whereabouts is now unknown, belonged to the art historian Xavier de Salas, at one time director of the Museo del Prado and a specialist in Rosales’ work. In its superbly monumental approach and rigorous profile format, it recalls the old Roman-style portraits.
