Apollo and Cupid
1812 - 1813. Pencil, Indian ink, Pencil on laid paper. Not on display
The third lunette of this set – at once more concise and more tentative – might depict Apollo and Cupid disputing their prowess with the bow, a prelude to the story of Daphne’s transformation. Madrazo combines the precise outlines of the figures, reworked in pen, with gestural strokes in charcoal for the natural setting, reflecting both his talent for landscape and his interest in this mythological account.
