The scene depicts Don Quixote leaving the inn caged in a chariot drawn by oxen and accompanied by a picturesque retinue (Don Quixote, Part I, Ch. XLVIII). This work was included in the 1867 National Exhibition of Fine Arts (no. 331), where it was awarded the third-place medal for the three paintings of Don Quixote presented by the artist.
