This is a preparatory sketch for the painting commissioned in 1880 by the Navalcarnero Town Council, which is currently unaccounted for. It was included in the 1884 National Exhibition of Fine Arts (no. 569). The catalogue of the exhibition contains the following passage: ‘On the arrival of the King on the occasion of his wedding to doña Mariana of Austria in the aforementioned town, where he was married, the council and clergy came out to receive him and pay him homage amidst the enthusiastic acclamations of the people (sketch of the painting intended for the town hall of the aforementioned town)’.
