Figure of a Moor
1797. White chalk, Black chalk on green paper. Not on display
This study is of a figure of a Moor climbing a step with his hands tied. There is also a detailed study of the subject’s head on the same sheet.
R. Arnáez wrongfully attributed it to Bayeu, believing it to have been related to his fresco The Surrender of Granada. It is in fact a preparatory work by Maella that was a study for one of the prisoners in the large fresco The Apotheosis of Hadrian, painted in la Cámera Oficial (the Official Chamber) of the Royal Palace in Madrid in 1797. It is undoubtedly the work of greatest commitment and quality among those made in Palace, strongly echoing the work of Mengs and Bayeu.
