The painting depicts Saint Teresa of Jesus (Avila, 1515 – Alba de Tormes, Salamanca, 1582). She is doctor of the Church and reformer of the Carmelite Order. The miracle depicted occurred while the saint´s first foundation was being built in Avila.

In 1561, Gonzalo de Ovalle, the saint´s nephew, a young boy, was found dead in his house in Avila, which was being converted into a Carmelite convent. The child came back to life after the saint´s prayers. Luis de Madrazo´s painting contrasts the theatricality and declamatory attitudes of the figures, the naivety of some of its parts, such as the saint´s nimbus or the ray of light penetrating the room, with the realism of the representation of the floor, the tiling, the blessing box or the chipping on the Wall.
