Francisca Serrano Aizpurúa
1871. Oil on canvas.Room 061B
Francisco Serrano Bedoya (1812-1882), a politician and army officer from Jaen, commissioned this portrait after his daughter’s death. She died of smallpox in December 1870, when she was only 20 years old. In its fluent execution and limited palette, enhanced by chiaroscuro, Rosales’ portrait – based on a photograph – hints at the sitter’s psychological depths.
