Head for the Figure of Liberty
1794. White chalk, Black chalk on blue paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the figure of Liberty in the right part of the central register of the fresco The Orders of the Spanish Monarchy, in the King’s Bedroom, now known as the Tapestry Room, in the Royal Palace in Madrid. The Museo del Prado keeps a related chiaroscuro sketch (P002481) and several related preparatory drawings. The head for the figure is studied in this drawing: it is a female head, depicted in right profile and crowned with an eagle. It appears to be the artist’s initial idea for this figure.
