Head for the Figure of the Virgin
1781. White chalk, Pencil on dark toned paper. Not on display
It is almost certainly a preparatory drawing for the main figure in the central part of the cupola interior fresco Regina Apostolorum, painted in 1781 and located in the nave on the left side of the Holy Chapel of the Basílica del Pilar in Zaragoza. Two preparatory sketches (one of them in grisaille) are kept in the Museo Diocesano in Zaragoza. In the museum, there are several preparatory drawings for the same fresco. This drawing is a study of the head for the figure of the Virgin. It is depicted frontally and foreshortened when viewed from below. This same drawing is attributed to Francisco Bayeu in the Inventory of the Real Museo, due to the close resemblance of the drawing to the fresco.
