Saint Andrew
1781. White chalk, Red chalk on green paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the figure of Saint Andrew in the lower left part of the cupola interior of the fresco Regina Apostolorum. Painted in 1781, it is located in the nave to the left of the Holy Chapel in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar in Zaragoza. The Museo Diocesano in Zaragoza keeps two preparatory sketches, one of which is in grisaille. The Museo del Prado also keeps many preparatory drawings for the same fresco. The figure is depicted nude and seated on a cloth, with his head turned to the left. His right arm is extended upwards, although his left arm is supported. A detailed study for the head (D000483) of the same figure is extant.
