In the last year of his life, Rosales accepted a commission to decorate the pendentives in the church of Santo Tomás in Madrid. By now seriously ill, and living in retirement in Murcia, he was barely able to complete two of the four Evangelists - Saint John and Saint Matthew, now in the Jeronimos Church, Madrid. This painting was a study for Saint Matthew.
