The Salón del Prado and the Church of San Jerónimo
Ca. 1871. Oil on canvas.Room 101
Background for the Entry of Amadeo I Count of Savoy and King of Spain in Madrid. Mentioned in some old inventories as a "drawing", it shows Rosales´s working method when it came to sketching the architecture of this barely outlined urban view, which was left undone by the ephemeral reign of its protagonist. In it, the artist designed the monumental buildings around la Fuente de Neptuno, including Museo del Prado, the Church of San Jerónimo el Real and la Puerta de Felipe IV, now moved to one of the entrances to El Retiro, with extraordinary rigour in his brushstroke and perspective.
