To the Saviour's feet!
1887. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
The scene depicts angry mobs of Christians persecuting the Jews who inhabited the city of Toledo in the Middle Ages. As is evident from the compromising nature of the subject, the painting and its author belong to the most liberal trend in Spanish history painting. This episode was chosen by Cutanda with the same intention of social denunciation against violence and injustice of his great pictures of workers´ conflicts, such as his famous Workers on Strike in Vizcaya, and resolved with identical skill in the agitated movement of the masses.
Painted by Cutanda at the age of 37, this piece of art was awarded “Third Class” medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1887.
