Banks of the Loir
1872. Oil on canvas.Room 062B
During his brief stay in the French town of Cloyes-sur-le-Loir, Rico returned to the theme of washerwomen which he had explored years earlier. He now, however, avoided sunsets and rather opted for markedly serene compositions. The treatment of the reflections in the water and the discontinuous, rapid and loose brushstroke can be associated with the technique of the Impressionists.
