Condemned by the Inquisition

Riding burros and wearing their famous dunce caps, those accused by the Tribunal of the Inquisition are paraded in front of the public. The surrounding crowd showers them with insults and sometimes blows, including the person holding an object at the center of the composition. Beginning with Goya´s subject matter and esthetic, Eugenio Lucas made this type of work with an invariably critical spirit. The depiction of the victims with their backs to the viewer, so that their faces are invisible, is the best proof of the painter´s deference to the condemned. The tenebrist use of light and the very vibrant impasto brushstrokes make for a clearly expressionist result in open conflict with the academicism that reigned when this painting was made. Moreover, the extreme use of black as the overall tonality, dramatically brings out the colors, creating a visual effect present in all his works.
