Consumatum est
1888. Oil on canvas. Not on display
The painting depicts the moment of Christ´s death as recorded in the Gospels, and here represented crucified with frontal view shrouded in darkness. This is a simplified version of the original painting belonging to the Hispanic Society Collection in New York. Executed years later in Seville and with the same title but in large format, it was submitted by the artist to the 1890 National Fine Arts Exhibition. An acquisition of Huntington from the artist´s family after his death, apparently on Sorolla´s instructions, it was presented in New York in 1911. This other version of the work belonged to Doctor Pedro Ruiz Prieto, a personal friend of the painter, who bequeathed it and other works by the artist to the Museo de Arte Moderno on his death.
