Flying Cherubim
XVII century. Grey-brown wash, Black chalk, White lead, Pencil, Red chalk on laid paper. Not on display
This scene presents the study of seven cherubim fluttering in various poses. One of them half-kneels in prayer, while another one holds a palm branch and a third scatters flowers.
On the reverse, there are some unidentifiable lines rendered in sanguine pencil.
It is a very characteristic work of Pereda. Rather than a preparatory work for a specific canvas, it seems to be a study of various poses. They may have been intended for later use in different compositions, especially for those of the Immaculate Conception, as in the drawing Angels for an Immaculate Conception (D173).
