Naked Child with Raised Arms
Ca. 1690. Black chalk on laid paper. Not on display
The child is depicted seated on what might be the outline of a step. The foreshortened perspective or forced viewpoint of the drawing suggests that it was intended for a ceiling decoration. In the lower-right corner, there are several barely sketched decorative motifs. Although the model of the head shares similarities with that of previous drawings on similar themes, the technique can be associated with the drawings on the Martyrdom of Saint Andrew (Parish Church of Santa María, Casarrubios del Monte in Toledo). Nevertheless, there are similarities with figures in the frescoes by Donoso and Coello (painters with whom the artist worked and collaborated), including those on the ceiling of the Vestry in Toledo Cathedral.
