In a number of surviving preparatory sketches for his painting (Museo del Prado, P004625), Rosales explored the arrangement and development of the figures; few changes were later made with respect to the idea captured in this preparatory study, which has been linked both to the colour sketch in the Prado and to the modellino in the MNAC (Barcelona).
