Saint Francis
1781. White chalk, Black chalk on green paper. Not on display
This is an initial preparatory study for the corresponding figure in the cupola interior before the Chapel of Saint John Baptist of the Regina Patriarcharum in the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar in Zaragoza. It was painted in 1781. The saint is kneeling, with his arms raised, over a gridded background. The depiction of the habit is very thorough.
The Museo del Prado keeps three other preparatory drawings for this cupola interior: Saint Romuald and Saint Francis Xavier (D000604), Young angel (D000445), and Male heads (D003279). Two sketches are kept in the Museo Diocesano in Zaragoza.
