The Death of Lucretia
Ca. 1866. Pencil, Indian ink on wove paper. Not on display
In this swift, concise sketch, Rosales anticipates the composition of the first drawing for The Death of Lucretia (P004613). A group of figures are horrified to discover the body of the noblewoman who, after being raped, has committed suicide at the foot of her own bed. The artist eventually discarded this early compositional approach, but the drawing is a good example of his need to set down his artistic reflections on paper.
