The Death of Lucretia
1866 - 1867. Pencil, Grey-brown ink on yellow paper.Not on display
Here, the scene of Rosales’ famous painting is sketched in an inverted composition, outlining some of the elements that would be retained right through to the final version. One figure supports Lucrecia’s lifeless body, while another holds her outstretched arm, a detail readily recognisable in the painting. Her body lies at the foot of a statue, beside which she is also depicted in other preparatory drawings.
