The Creation of a Young Workshop
Rafael Alonso Alonso, Restorer, 1978-2016The Creation of a Young Workshop
Rafael Alonso Alonso, Restorer, 1978-2016
Don Alfonso Emilio Pérez Sánchez asked me to bring in another fellow restorer who I could vouch for. So that’s when Alfredo Piñeiro came. The Dávila sisters, Enrique Quintana, Clara Quintanilla, Almudena Sánchez and Elisa Mora also came at that time. And, successively, a group of restorers was created that had new ideas and applied a series of more uniform and up-to-date criteria. Because when I arrived at the Restoration Workshop, there were only two painting restorers, who, incidentally, never talked to each other: Antonio Fernández Sevilla and Javier Carrión. There was no real workshop as such; we gradually created it by working together. In this respect, we all contributed our knowledge and know-how with considerable enthusiasm, and we developed together, thus shaping the personality of our workshop.
He works at the Restoration Workshop of the Museo del Prado, specializing in the works of El Greco. He is also Professor of Restoration at the Official School of Applied Arts in Madrid, and he received the National Prize for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Goods in 2010.
