Portrait of a Cultured Greek

Ca. 220. White marble.
Not on display

This work has been so retouched that it is difficult to determine whether it is a copy of the portrait of a Greek whose facial features (but not his expression) somewhat recall Polyeuktos´s sculpture of Demosthenes, or instead a highly restored modern work. The nose, ears and herm-shaped bust are certainly modern. This work appears in the Ajello sketchbook (drawing 50, at the bottom) as Hippocrates, and in the El Carpio Album as Posidonius. It passed from the Marquis of El Carpio´s collection to the House of Alba, and from there to Philip V´s collection at the La Granja de San Ildefonso Palace.
