Woman at the beach
1910 - 1920. Oil on canvas.On display elsewhere
An elegantly dressed woman, seated on a chair, protects herself from the sun’s rays with a pink and white parasol, which she rests on her right shoulder so that her face and part of her body remain in the shade. Pla, like his contemporaries Ignacio Pinazo and Joaquín Sorolla, frequently painted the upper classes at the seaside – in this case, it is probably Las Arenas beach in Valencia – since summer holidays were considered a sign of distinction and social status at the time.
