Gabriele Finaldi, that marvellous man who for 12 years helped us to achieve everything I’ve been talking about. Plus travelling: we’ve been round the world together and experienced marvellous things both personally and professionally. Those trips abroad, when we appreciated the respect that existed and still exists for the Museo del Prado outside Spain. When we started we said: “We want to be like the Metropolitan, or we want to be like the National Gallery”. When Gabriele Finaldi came to work with us he offered a different way of working in art historical, institutional and museological terms, and we were always waiting for that to come from outside. In the end I believe that this Museum was able to give a few lessons to others.
Director of the Museo del Prado and trustee of the Friends of the Museo del Prado Foundation. He was also assistant director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and is currently director of the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao.
