Frame of Still Life with Grapes

Third quarter of the XVIII century. Carved, Ensamblado a media madera, Water gilding.
Room 039

This model is known as the “Charles IV Pier” frame, since it was meant to give the paintings at the Royal Pier pavilions at Aranjuez a more uniform appearance. Probably designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in around 1785, it was mostly used for genre pictures, such as the still lifes painted for the pavilions by Luis Meléndez. It was produced by the cabinetmaker José López and gilders Benito and José Santiuste.
