Frame of The Preaching of Saint John the Baptist
Late XVII - Primera mitad del siglo XVIII century. Ensamblado a media madera, Water gilding.Room 005
This frame takes its name from the Italian artist Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), who used it for his paintings. Originating in Rome, it was inspired by classical architecture, and especially by the bases of Doric columns. The frame became popular throughout Europe in the 18th century, prompting a range of regional interpretations – all drawing on this model – including the so-called Calleja, Mengs and Charles IV frames.
