Frame of Saint John the Evangelist
Second half of the XVIII century. Carved, Water gilding, Ensamblado a media madera.Room 028
This Neoclassical “Prince Charles IV” frame – strongly influenced by Italian models – was probably designed before Charles became king, to decorate the Casita del Príncipe at El Escorial. It was inspired by the so-called “Salvator Rosa frame” which the prince’s grandparents, Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese, used at the La Granja palace. The gilding, with its alternating burnished and matt finishes, creates highlights on the painting.
