Group of maja on the stroll
1794 - 1795. Wash, Brush, Bistre on laid paper Not on displayThese young women are dressed with the popular elegance of the majas; they are somewhat too done up with their coifs and mantillas and the quantity of their frills and lace, and with the added humorous touch of their pointed heeled shoes. Their costumes are an essential part of the game of seduction, as revealed by the black mantillas hiding half the face of the young woman on the right, who also gestures with her fan. Goya has arranged the majas in a circle to emphasize the group concept (Album B, 28).
