He's Helping Him to Die Well

1824 - 1828. Pencil on laid paper. Not on display

Bordeaux Sketchbook H, sheet 44. With a severe expression, a monk of the Capuchin order, which rigorously defended and propagated Catholicism, waves a crucifix before a prisoner. In other compositions by Goya, condemned prisoners and those on the brink of execution or already dead hold a cross. This one, however, clutches a book or sheet of paper; his skullcap, hair, beard, and markedly aquiline nose identify him as Jewish. The larger crucifix in the background furnishes the justification for his punishment: the ancient guilt of having put to death the Son of God. The artist previously depicted this subject in a critical manner in For Being of Jewish Ancestry, sheet 88 of Sketchbook C (London, British Museum). Here, the condemned man holds the prayer for the dead, or Kaddish, offering proof of his similarly unbreakable faith.
