Dalí went to the Museum and pulled one of his tricks. He painted a portrait of Franco's granddaughter on a wooden horse. He showed up at the Museum, even though he hadn't yet finished the painting. I remember they lined up a row of chairs in the hall dedicated to Velázquez, as they did at the cinema. Aristocrats and other people came along and sat there. They bought the painter a palette, some paint brushes, different colours, a bit of everything. It was funny because he went back behind everyone, took up a paint brush and aimed. He rocketed out and nailed it on one of the eyes. "There! That's it!" That's what he did.

He began to work at the Museum as a carpenter and later, after a while as a gallery attendant, he joined the restoration workshop, carrying out carpentry work which was his specialty. His father also worked at the Museo Nacional del Prado and helped evacuate works of art during the Spanish Civil War.
