Sacrificing Interest

1796 - 1797. Pencil, Iron gall ink on laid paper Not on display

This preparatory drawing for the etching Capricho 14, What a Sacrifice! (G02102) is part of The Dreams, a series of twenty-six pen-and-ink drawings that serve as the basis for the Caprichos. Headed by Dream 1. The Author Dreaming, which became number 43 in the definitive and expanded Caprichos. The subject matter was common in that period as dreams were used to represent the world from the perspective of the artist’s imagination without reference to any concrete reality. The print and the preparatory drawing are identical except for some background details. We know the subject thanks to handwritten comments by Valentín Cardera at the Bibilioteca Nacional and the Museo del Prado. Both reveal a degree of social criticism. The first reads: Vile interest obliges Parents to sacrifice their young and pretty daughter by marrying her to an old hunchback, and there is no lack of priests to endorse such weddings. The meaning is completed by the second manuscript: As must be, the groom is not the most appealing, but he is rich, and an unfortunate girl’s freedom is the price to pay for rescuing a famished family. So goes the World. The Museo del Prado has a series of works related to Dream 15 (G02102 / G00646), and there is a steel-plated copper plate from the same series at Calcografía Nacional in Madrid (203 x 152 mm, 331.55 g. No. 3440). The mark of the plate is visible on the drawing as a result of its tracing on the copper plate (201 x 150 mm), as are 26 mm vertical laid lines (Text from: Matilla, J.M. and others: El libro de los Caprichos. Francisco de Goya: dos siglos de interpretaciones, 1799-1999. Catálogo de los dibujos, pruebas de estado, láminas de cobre y estampas de la primera edición, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, 1999. pp. 21, 116).
