Witches disguised as normal people

1796 - 1797. Pencil, Iron gall ink, Black chalk lines on laid paper Not on display

This preparatory drawing for the etching Capricho 40, Of what illness will he die? (G02115) is part of The Dreams, a series of twenty-six pen-and-ink drawings that serve as the basis for The Caprichos in the first stage of its creation. The subject matter was common in that period in compositions employed by Enlightenment critics. The compositional scheme changes almost entirely between The Dream and the final print, although not the underlying meaning. Goya criticizes ignorant and imprudent doctors in the form of various figures wearing medical gowns. This is confirmed by manuscripts at Biblioteca Nacional and Calcografía Nacional. The former reads: It is not necessary to ask what illness killed the patient who pays heed to brutal and ignorant doctors. And this is seconded by the latter notation: The gravest disease is a mysterious and ignorant doctor [one who suggests the presence of hidden things where there are none]. The Museo del Prado has various works related to Capricho 40 (G02128/ G00649 / D03949), and there is also a steel-plated copper plate from the same series at Calcografía Nacional in Madrid (216 x 152 mm, 317.30 g. No. 3466). The paper bears 26-27 mm vertical laid lines (Text from: Matilla, J.M. and others: El libro de los Caprichos. Francisco de Goya: dos siglos de interpretaciones, 1799-1999. Catálogo de los dibujos, pruebas de estado, láminas de cobre y estampas de la primera edición, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, 1999. pp. 21, 226).
