Fernando Checa Cremades, Museum Director, 1996-2001
When I joined, education was a question that was handled quite well, but the number of initiatives was rather scarce. As of the 1970’s and 1980’s, education became a fundamental aspect at museums, and the Museo del Prado was unable to offer this dimension because it lacked the resources, not only the financial resources but, essentially, the administrative structure. This was one of the reasons why the Friends of the Museo del Prado Foundation, a private association linked to the Museum, took responsibility for this aspect. Today it’s impossible to conceive of a museum without a corresponding series of original and high-quality educational projects. And, naturally, the Museo del Prado has to offer projects of this kind.
Director of the Museo del Prado from 1996 to 2001, art historian and museographer, specializing in Baroque painting and especially in collectionism and royal patronage in Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries.
